At a later point I might write in explicit detail about the process, and how it could benefit any college team. But for now, this post is covering the top performers in the adidas 3SSB 17U league this past summer, and highlighting interesting observations purely from a statistical perspective. Is this ideal? No, in fact I just wrote about why that is the case. But when there are so many players to consider, and time is super valuable (specifically for college staffs), this is better than sitting down, watching way too much film, and travelling to all of these events. Using these stats should be the first pass for any coaching staff, and would save them so much time by preventing them from chasing down bad intel, and wasting time watching film trying to find a guy that pops that no one else sees.

Jalen Davis, meanwhile, put up 23.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.5 steals per game while producing approximately 64.8% TS, an 87.8% FT rate, a 4.08 AST/TO ratio and 4.89 steals per 100. His raw box plus-minus was actually technically better than Pemberton’s, which is reflective of his teammates being better around him.

Kamari Whyte has an argument to be included in this top tier, and that starts with being much more of a two-way player in the wing archtetype. While he is not a three point threat, he made 65.4% of his twos, attempted 100 free throws on only 210 FGA, and took just 19 threes. This is basically the statistical fingerprint of an extremely powerful downhill guard. Whyte recently committed to Georgia Tech, and transferred to Blair Academy for his senior season.

Brandon Hahn is a undoubtedly going to be a stock riser to keep track of. He averaged 20.2 points and 7.9 rebounds, shot 40.6% from three on 96 attempts, made 60.6% of his twos and finished at roughly 64.6% TS over a huge 499-minute sample. His DBPM is essentially zero, which keeps him out of the very top of the leaderboard, but I'd be careful interpreting that literally as "bad defender." Box Plus-Minus has limited ability to identify good wing defense unless it manifests in steals, blocks or rebounding. 3PT% is very finnicky at the AAU in terms of translating, but in the neilball database he is a career 81.5% free throw shooter on 130 attempts which is a great sign¹. Mason Martin, an Illinois commit, fits largely the exact same description.

Kamsi Awaka is a well known prospect at this point but another prospect with a similar statistical profile is Yann Kamagate. Kamagate, who is playing a year up, had 162 rebounds and 55 blocks in 445 minutes. That translates to roughly: 9.5 RPG, 3.2 BPG, 19.3 rebounds/100 and 6.55 blocks/100. As mentioned earlier, BPM is definitely an offensive-biased statistic, so while Kamagate isn’t some tremendous creator in hiding, he also might be more capable on offense than BPM suggests.

Jonathan Bradley is another under-the-radar prospect. Bradley quietly posted 15.7 PPG, 3.1 APG, 64.2% TS, 82.2% FT, 2.63 AST/TO and +4.78 OBPM in 389 minutes. Scope Scouting² noted earlier this year that he had just one Division I offer despite his 3SSB production and expected the recruitment to expand. This is exactly the type of player I'd flag from a database like this before spending significant scouting time.
